Basic Electronics » How much should I strip?

I just got my kit and I had a basic question. In general how deep does the wire need to go into the breadboard? I'm asking because the voltage regulator goes in about twice as far as the wires I've stripped so far. Should I aim for the same depth for both wires and components?

I would estimate at between 8mm - 10mm or 5/16" - 3/8". But really as long as the wire or component is in the board enough to hold and make contact, it's good.

I generally keep the stripped ends to about 1/4" or maybe a little shorter. I don't want any bare or exposed surface outside the immediate areas of the connections.
